Project Title: Student Scientists for Sea Turtle Conservation
Project Manager: Deborah Prochaska
Organization: Nova Eisenhower Elementary (Research and Educational Institute)
Grant Amount: $3,000.00
Completion Date:

Summary: Elementary and middle school students will utilize materials and lessons within the Traveling Turtle Trunk to learn about sea turtles through experiential lessons that include nesting simulations, population sampling techniques, as well as participation in a mock sea turtle work up similar to those that are conducted in the real world. The “work up” includes utilizing quantitative measuring skills such as measuring, weighing, and calculating numbers to predict population sizes of sea turtles; qualitative skills are utilized in reference to comparing and contrasting sea turtle species, observing, and describing specific animal conditions, as well as comparing and contrasting sea turtle prey animals. The lessons align with Florida state standards in math, science, and language arts for grades three through eight, however the materials can also be utilized in different ways that align with the standards for younger grades.
