Summary: The Gulfarium C.A.R.E. Foundation rehabilitates, and releases stranded sea turtles from the northern Gulf Coast of Florida and Alabama as well as cold-stunned turtles from New England. Over the last two years we have seen an increase in stranded sea turtles, both recreational fishing and traditional strandings. It has become difficult to keep up with the continuous incoming stranding calls. On more than one occasion turtles have had to be transported by stranding response teams to neighboring facilities due to no holding space for turtle admissions. Additionally, an increase in debilitated turtles has resulted in more sea turtle mortalities. Current equipment and space for performing necropsies is ineffective. Therefore, the C.A.R.E. Center will renovate a nearly 25-year-old multi-purpose metal sheeting building into a designated necropsy suite, as well as additional transport tubs to hold turtles for intake exams, release transport, dry docking after surgical procedures, and holding for necropsy. Funds to purchase equipment will greatly increase the efficiency to conduct necropsies in a timely manner and increase our knowledge and improve clinical outcomes for every stranded sea turtle. Transport bins will ensure that all turtles stranded in our immediate area will have space and receive rapid medical care.
